Buying a potted evergreen
to serve both as a Christmas tree and a yard tree is
an eco-friendly option.
Most trees do best if
they are planted soon after purchase and during the
cool months of autumn. These can be bought from a christmas
tree nursery already potted, and are great if you want
to keep and plant your tree after Christmas.
Purchase the tree as close
to Christmas as possible, and keep in indoors for as
brief a time as you can. It is also important to prepare
a planting spot outdoors before the ground freezes so
hard you can't dig.
But beware, they grow up to 100 feet in
the right environment.

When you first plant the tree do not put extra
soil around the base as this can suffocate the
tree from the base, remember the tree gets its
food and water from the soil and off course
it thrives on natural sunlight.
I would advise when first planting
the tree though to spread a thinnish layer of
compost which will give the goodness that the
tree requires in order for it to grow strong
and quickly.

Next Steps
Once you have your tree in the ground, growing
and looking healthy you can prune the tree to
control and shape it.
Light pruning should be done in the first 15
to 20 years of the life of a tree as this determines
the shape of the tree to come. To prune a tree
you need to remove broken or diseased branches
as soon as possible to improve the tree’s
appearance and to stop decay. Always remove
suckers or sprouts around the base of the tree.
Also remove thin or week branches and this improves
the health of the tree and helps it grow.
