Planting and Care.

eco friendly gifts Caring for your tree is simple really and I include instructions with each tree.
Heres a few important points...
  • Dig a hole 2-3 times the diameter of the container and the same depth as the container.
  • If available about 1/2 a bucket of rotted cow manure could be mixed through the soil you removed. Its even better than anything you can buy!
  • Drive a 4 ft stake in the hole, slightly off center.
  • Make sure the tree rootball is saturated before planting.
  • Gently tease out and prune if damaged any circling roots. But be very careful not to overdo this when the tree has leaves. In the wintertime you can be much less careful....in fact its preferred to loosen the rootball in the dormant season. (end of Autumn and Winter)
  • Put the tree in the hole and backfill the soil you dug out, firming often using your heel. Essential that your tree should not be planted deeper than it was in the pot. It should be at soil level.
  • Tie the tree to the stake at approx 1/3 the tree height, using a soft tie (which prevents damage to the bark). Keep staked for 2-3 yrs untill tree is wind firm. But make sure the "tie" allows a little room for the trunk to grow. So check all is ok once a year.
  • Apply a mulch to prevent grass from competing for moisture and nutrients.

Never use a strimmers around a tree as it will damage the bark, which will eventually kill it.
And remember that a newly planted tree may need your help with water untill its been in position for one growing season. In dry weather about a bucket a week...so long as it soaks down and dosent just run away first.
Although with the summers weve been getting, will you even need to!

Those Pesky Varmints!

Rabbits can kill a young tree overnight by knawing on the bark. If you have rabbits in the area, I strongly suggest using a treeguard. This can be as simple as using some land drainage piping around the base of the trunk. About 2 ft high. You would need to cut the piping down one side to get it around the trunk.

I became a customer after receiving a Gift Tree Ireland tree from my daughter. Even though my garden was well planted, you can always find a place for one more. The tree now has pride of place. When I consider the price of a bunch of cut flowers and how short lived they are, its a no brainer for me. Thanks. Richard...Kilkenny.
I was concerned about the pollution created by delivering the trees by road, but when I thought about it, I realised that this pollution is likely offset in the trees first years of growing and then of course it continues to do so year after year. I really admire what you are doing...

Thank you so much for the great BayTrees, the folks were delighted, I knew you would look after them, and for that I am very appreciative. The website really has moved on, and I thought it was great already, brilliant. Thanks again, looking forward to popping into your website in the future. Mandy...London
I recently learned that Ireland is the sixth most climate polluting country in the world per person. We need to change our habits and your service gives people a chance to do some real good for our climate. Just like the welcomed charge for plastic bags, this is truly a gift that will make a change. Change your world...change the world, as they say. We are buying gifts anyway. Excellent service... Peter...Dublin.

The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.
